Anyone have any grimy tips and tricks or just general use tips for the s900/950. I've been rocking the s900 for a year or so now and I'm just trying to see what else I can get out of it.

I really like it. I usually only use it grime up samples. It's really easy to record from the PC in to the s900, fuck with the sample rate or resample and then put it back into your mix on the PC. It's especially dope for blowing up drum sounds. I suppose I would rather have an sp, but they are hard to come by and costly.

The s900 was my first machine I got it back in 98 it's in my mothers basement...the fan in it went out but I'm about to fix it and start using it a gain it is a good machine only problem is you have to format everydisk before you save...I got used to the mpc 2000xl and the fact that it reads ibm formatted disk

Hey,
You don't use the disks!?! How do you save your sounds then?

I save all the sounds and sequence everything on the PC, so all i really use the s900 for is getting the "classic sound" out of it. I used to fuck with the disks but it was such a pain in the ass that now I do it this way. I get the same results bothways anyway.

I was just wondering if you use software to transfer files from your PC to Your S950 (or vise versa), and if so could you outline your setup.
Let me know whats up...

That software does exist, but I don't use it. I record from the out on the PC or turntable to the sampler and then from the out on the sampler into the PC.
I personally think this works better than using the disks because part of the characteristic sound of vintage samplers is obtained by recording directly, rather than transferring sound files on disks.
If you do want to mess with going from PC to s900/950 with disks I recommend checking out this site http://www.synthzone.com/akai.htm there is alot of useful info.

Hey,
I see what you're doing, you're sort of using the sampler as an 'effects' unit, you like the way the outputs effect the sound.
Have you tried using any bit-reduction plugins to try to get the same sound, to reduce files from 16 bits to 12 bits.
Polyester, I'm trying to do file transfers from the computer to a Yamaha A5000 sampler across a SCSI cable using Recycle and Wavesurgeon...honestly, it's kind of a pain in the butt, software samplers are SO much easier. What's nice about doing the editing on the computer instead of the sampler is that it is a lot faster using a mouse and monitor instead of the little display and knobs on the sampler.
Take care,
Nick

I never tried using software plugins to get a grimey sound, but from what I've erad, it never turns out as warm sounding...

you can make a drum loop, convert it to real media format (low resolution), remove some of the high frequencies, do some more eqing and maybe add a little bit reverb and compression and have some raw drumsounds.
btw, thank you fade, if real media wouldnŽt be a requirement for the beat this competition, iŽd probably not have come up wit this trick ;-)
