whattup beat heads,
I think it would be cool if everyone could give a brief snapshot of where you all are at with your music production and what your current projects are etc.
I'll set if off;
Right now I'm still mastering the craft. I feel that I've come along way with my production but I know I still have a long way to go to be satisfied with my work. At the moment I'm mainly using software - FLStudio 4.1 is my main "instrument at the moment. I'm getting a new MIDI keyboard this week and am looking forward to that.
I'm also going to learn Reason 1.0 once my keyboard arrives, and I'm learning to DJ at the moment as well.
I've got a couple of MCs that I'm working with and I'm keen to expand this in the near future. I'm working on making a decent Beat Cd and letting interested MCs preview it. Also want to make a good webpage or soundclick page too.
feel free to leave comments and let us know whats cracking with y'all.
Good Idea, at the moment I am just loving making beats and learning new things about music all the time. I'm trying to figure out what equipment I should buy next and have just started working with a couple of mc's. Searching for samples is something that takes up a lot of my time as well and I want to put together an e.p by the end of the year.
Let's see some more replies!

whatup J-UK,
I know what you mean about searching for samples, it can take ages some times but it's worth it when you get some goos samples from it. What eqiuipment are you considering getting?
I like this thread so I'm gonna post to keep it going...
Right now a lot of my time is spent building up and maintaing this site, which I'm hoping will lead to big things for myself and all you guys in the music business.
My current setup is, well... I don't have my stuff with me just yet (it's a LONG story) so I'm trying my best to bang out some beats on this PC and lots of samples. I'm not looking to produce anybody anytime soon, but maybe next year will be the one.
I'm actually working on some beats that will be used on an upcoming instrumental LP that I'd like to eventually release.... But like I said, there's nothing set in stone right now so I'll leave it at that.

I just got done buying close to 7 gees a new equipment. So i have alot to learn but i been making beats on other stuff in the past so im not stuck reading books on how to do this or that. Right now im working on a few beat cd's and getting ready to record a underground/Demo cd for one of my artist i plann to come up with in later on this year. I think right now i have everything i need to make something happen for me so if i cant do it with what i have then i dont think there is a need to buy anything else so ill say im out of the equipment buying market for a while. Im kind of fed up with the city im at, with the lack of non music stuff going on if i was to stay here and try to make something happen i would be better off investing in snake oil. I think within the next year ima travel over to nyc and try to network and make some connects. I need to get out of this city so i hope something comes out of my trips to nyc but if nothing really pops then i plan to go to atl and set up shop and keep intouch with those i came across in the past year. Right now my artist is from ny but got ship off to atl by his parents and its just not worth coming back to this city when the game is more open down there so i think it would be worth it for me to go down there i just need to network while im up here so i dont get lost in the mix while im down there.

sounds good Fade, put me down as a customer for your instrumental cd when/if it gets released.
whatup fame_keyz, it sounds like your close to making some big things happen playa - good luck with it. I plan on getting some new equipment in the near future, do you mind letting us know what you got and why you choose those particular products?

wow -- good stuff here -- well let's see....
i actually had a group that put out an underground album (11 songs) a couple of years ago -- not enough drive and promotion led to nothing accomplished during that time period -- group ended up separating -- but may eventually get back together -- as of now i'm producing tracks for local artists -- leasing and selling also -- i've got a few tracks on one established local artist's next project and one upcoming local artist's project -- just trying to build on a 5 year foundation at this point -- a lot of things to accomplish in the future

nice thread.
right now i finally have the equipment i need. iīm having problems to adopt to fl studio, which doesnīt have some of the functions i loved about floops, but every day I spend working with this program it is getting easier for me. i just think switching to a newer version should not confuse users that much.
apart from that there will be an album with a local artist where I did half of the beats. weīre just waiting the stuff to be mixed and mastererd and heīs trying to get things working with his old label. release date is gonna be somewhen this summer.
iīm also working on my own album , which is gonna be some kind of sampler where Iīll feature rappers that i got to know over the years of travelling through Germany. Things are looking nice, but as a week only has 7 days with 24 hours, time is a big issue. I hope to be done late summer / fall of 2003.
I have stopped selling beats (so far). I sold some beats a while ago, but I think I just "feel" too much for my beats and was upset when I heard what the mcs buying it did with my beats. So Iīm quitting this part of the game. That way I am in a position that lets me say "yes" or "no" cuz now i have more power and donīt owe anyone anything, because I own the rights and share them for free. Donīt get me wrong, I am not trying to be bossy or establish a dictatorship - I just want to make good music and be in control! Making money ainīt really an issue to me right now - iīm just trying to get my name out, getting good mcs to rap on my beats and get some feedback. Thereīs nothing like seeing a rapper do a show on one of your beats and the crowd is partying.
For the future I hope to develope my skills and my style. I want to get better and faster at recording - finding the perfect settings for preamp and mic and learn more of cep - and start to get more into tweaking (effects and synthesizers) since my new oxygen has those nice knobs.
thatīs it for now. If anything is being released iīll let you know.

I'm just trying to work on my game, I'm trying to develop my own style. I don't want to sound like the producers that are out know. I looking for that different style to put me on the map. I really don't have much time to make beats I work full time, have two kids and my wife is in med school so i do everything around the house. but when i do sit down and create its a great feeling. Once i'm comfortable with my style I won't have a hard time selling a joint here or there i know a few people. They just waiting for product. I hope I can work with some of u guys in the future. Peace Strong Will

that all sounds real good guys. It's good to see everyone, positive, being productive AND enjoying themselves. To all those people who are releasing stuff/have released stuff I'm sure we'd all like to hear it so keep us up to date with it.

I'm currently working on an album with an artist that I have and once we have 12-15 songs complete I'm going to print up about 200 cd's(all material copy written) and just give them away the cd will contain artist and producer contac information and a bio of artist and producer(me)...
I'm also close to working on 50 cents next album and the solo albums of his two artist Tony YaYo and LLoyd Banks After this big tour of his is over we're going to talk about it.....
Right now me and my cousin are just trying to bang out as much shit as we can....He has an artist that's just hot they have about 8 songs complete and are doing the same thing I'm planning to do...actually it was his idea and if anything happens from there we will go into bussines together with a production company that we're trying to get off the ground and maybe even a record lable down the line but I don't want to look too far in the future all I know is I not going to give up no matter what.........

Great discussion!
As for me...am basically trying to learn as much as possible and continue to work on beats everyday. To me, it's not just making a track or beat, is making an entire song that takes peeps on a journey. I don't produce for anyone, but every now and then I let peeps listen to some stuff just to get feedback. I also dig for samples cause that's part of the whole process, in my opinion. In the end, I love the music and I do it for the love...not the loot. Maybe in the future it will pay off, but I don't really think about that cause it may never happen. One!

Right now i got a Mpc 2k xl and a motif(few plug in boards) and with a lap top and pro tools m box. I lil mackie 1202 board. some alesis mk1 mk2 active monitors a tape recorder and a stand alone cd recorder(when i just want to record a beat and hop into the truck no need to deal with the computer) o yea a good condencer mic. O yea i got jl cooper cs32 mini controler. all this stuff is not even over a year old yet some of it aint even 4 months old. Im still at home with my peoples but in the last year i got this good job paying some good money so i said "hey i have no kids or bills(like rent or what not) i could just save up everydollar i make and get everyting i want and not lose nothing but time cause its only me in this world" So i just reinvented studio with some power. The truth is we only live once and i will never regret all the money i spent on equipment compare to how my boys is buy trucks and cars with tv's and rims or running after holes. If i did what they are doing and i find myself at the age 40 looking at my kid doing what he wants in life i could find myself regreting not going after music. So im just gona go hard as i can and just be bug and try to connect with people.

Me, I'm trying to do the best I can with what I got. Now I'm in a bad period for music. Some time ago, I put all my energy in it and I'm not very shure I acheived anything really. It's seems like if I do the type of beat that I like I get no love but if I do something that seems to me like weak and not fresh, people really dig it. It's very frustrating.
Anyhow, now I got a job not related with music. I'll continue the crate digging and I'll continue to make beats I like but I have not hope of doing this in a lucrative way.

It started out wit a box of captain crunch cereal some turntables and a mental illness.
Started by mixing, then i discovered instrumental version of my favorite songs, then started writing my own shit to em. Then said fuck these beats i'm gunna make my own beats too, bought a shitty drum machine wrote better flos, earned some repsect, moved to a different town met a white kid named barry, a black kid named imani, and a mexican kid named omar and formed a group called the DEADLY KOMBINATIONS! Now we almost done with the first album and we're about to go places PEACE!

Thanks HaZwaiOH....you're right about the loose promisies so That's why I'm not putting all my eggs in that basket I'm recording as much as I can with my artist and if don't get no where with that whole 50 thing I have that and a couple other cats I want to work with to fall back on but the fustrating thing is I have to chill out with the posting stuff in the showcase now because I'm too deep into recording and pick joints to the side for homeboy to choose...I really like posting joints for the feed back Last week alone I made like 8 joints but I have to sit on them now....

inctyhoodmusic, stick with your local group and see how far it will take you. if 50 wants your beats heīll have some one call and youīll be in there pretty fast.
but waiting for others to perform certain actions is the worst thing you can do! I wasted too much time that way and the disappointment was even bigger...
I personally dont like sampling. I feel that a beat is better when it all comes from the heart. I just wanna be the person that people are sampling later on in life thats what i aim for.
