what do u use for makin beats???

Hmmm... what's yours?

I used to have all hardware, but now I'm basically just rockin' computer stuff.

-Dell Pentium 4, 1.8gHz, 256 RAM, 40 GB HD
-Soundblaster soundcard
-Cakewalk Sonar
-Cool Edit
-Fruity Loops
-2 Technics SL-1200MK2 Turntables
-Stanton SK-1 mixer
-Kaysound MK-4902 MIDI controller
-Alesis Nanosynth
-Vinyl, CDs, etc...

Even though it would be nice to have lots of hardware gear, doing my beats on a PC setup is so much more flexible for me. :thumb:

howd you hook up ur turntables to your computer? where do you get your sounds from??

Fade
02-01-2002, 06:32 PM
I hooked up my turntables to my PC by pluggin my turntables into my DJ mixer, then connecting my mixer into my soundcard. There's a special RCA wire that has the regular 2 plugs at one end, and 1 plug at the other end (1/8 inch), which goes into the soundcard.

I think I covered that in one of my articles:
http://www.illmuzik.com/articles/bpcrecording1.shtml

And I get my drums from vinyl, and most of my sounds are played with the Alesis Nanosynth.

I´m, using the MPC2K too,
got an old technics (no i´m not a DJ, no one and twos) turntable that is connected to a old time mixer which is connected to different stuff, like PC in/out, minidisc
(great for any type of sample recording when you can´t use PC or Sampler).
On my PC have just CoolEdit and Steinberg but that one I don´t use. Cooledit is enough and I hate using the Computer( a 348mhz PII with 192ram)

I have a masterkeyboard midi plugged in on my mpc but that is only for some melody stuff and quite uncomfortable.

so thats my setup..............Ba Boommm´ Ba Chuck

btw, those DIY pre amp are based on Neve's and they're about $450. All details on parts, prints and schematics can be found on a website that I'll post later. Other DIY projects are SSL compressors to complete Class A mixers with pre amps, neve EQ etc etc. You just need a little bit of technical knowledge and if you dont know its a good time to start. Neve Pre amps and SSL compressors dont come in cheapo and think about the quality....

It's nice, but think about it; you need to find a good space suitable for recording those reverbs. So, it's nice for big studio that like to capture there own reverbs but as a bedroom techie you'd be better of with a Lexicon.

I thought the point was just to emulate pres the way a POD models amps? I want that versatility. I might need a warm pre one day and might need a transparent one the next.

It's actualy for guitars, we mostly record them dry and signal it through the pod during mixdown/mastering. It just depends on what suites what. They're also some speaker cabinets which we handle the same but by actual mic and speaker. But the pod is pretty good, I also use it sometimes to give my drums a bit edge in the same way I'd use Amplitube. So, you see, there's no real defined use for the tool, there are industrial standards though but I dont have to take em in account all the time. The flexibility of wanting different aglorithm simply lies in your inventory, I dont think one make/model is the solution, you need options to choose from.

hookiefree
01-22-2004, 10:11 AM
^ Huh? I should have been more clear.
I was saying that I thought the purpose of the liquid channel was to emulate all the classic mic pres in the same way that PODs emulate all the classic amplifiers. I didn't understand what my room's reverb had to do with it.

I use a pretty basic setup here due to lack of funds.

A very basic PC - 750 Mhz Processor & 800 Mb RAM :barf:
Cubase SX 2.01
Korg microKONTROL midi keyboard
M-Audio Audiophile 2496 Soundcard
Wavelab 4
Logitech Speakers (Getting the Mackie HR824(pair) Studio Monitors)
Lots of VST instruments and effects
AKAI Sample Cd's
Native Instruments Kontakt, Kompakt and Intakt

Wish I had the coin for more shit, but thats all for now.

Peace out

Decibal

M-Audio - Delta 10/10 soundcard (8ins/8outs)
Roland XP-80 Keyboard / Controller
Reason, Live, Wavelab, SoundForge, ACID, loads of VSTs, samples, blah blah blah...
A shitty Pioneer Turntable, and a few hundred records from garage sales.
6 string instruments (lute, guitars - acoustic, hollow body, bass, 12 string) and some drums.

That's it.. trying to keep it simple... with one keyboard controller, one set of monitors, one PC, a descent mixer and sound card... and of course the MPC... what else do you need?

For me, it's all about software these days... (until I can afford to go to analog tape like Dre, which will never happen.)
