you cant use a normal sound card with pro tools you need wither m-audio hardware or digidesign hardware thats all period. BTW how did you get pro tools with out digi hardware? is it PTfree?

Is this so? I just ordered an M audio 2496 sound card. I just want pro tools to track my songs so I can be compatible with other beatmakers. Do I still need the box?

you will have to get pro tools m-powered.

PT Free works with any audiocard. The catch is that it's based on 5.x, only works under Win98SE/WinME and, if memory serves me, only supports 8 audio tracks.
To get Pro Tools working, you need the hardware it supports. There's no real way around it.
