Hey,

Just curious....

Do any of you own or have used the following equipment? Do you know what they're used for?

I don't know if it's the same thing but I'm thinking of buying that;

I guess it's a cheaper version of what you've linked...

I have the below midi mixer, as mentioned also by DNT. I guess it's similar...actually, the first 2 doesn't look any better than the one I have but the Doepfer looks awesome...

Hey,

Check THIS out:

http://www.tascam.com/products/computer_recording/fw1884/index.php

This thing is frigging AWESOME!!!!!

It's a soundcard:

8 XLR/line inputs (like the Aardvark Q10)
connects to your computer via firewire
24/96
ADAT lightpipe
SPDIF

It's a mixer:

Preamps on each XLR input
phantom power
inserts on each channel
headphone output
pan/solo/mute
8 motorized faders
4 bands of eq on each channel
18 inputs (8 analogue, 8 ADAT, 2 SPDIF)

MIDI interface:

4 ins and outs
Word Clock

DAW control surface:

You can control the faders and other mixer objects in your favorite software, like Cubase, Digital Performer, Logic, Sonar, etc., as well as software synthesizers.

Later this year you will be able to get 8 channel expansions, you can chain up to 8 of them for a total of 128 channels of audio....

This mixer is so cool, and the best thing is that it will cost between $1200-$1500. If you were to get all the devices separately, you'd pay a ton more:

8 input mixer - $300
8 input soundcard with preamps - $600
ADAT soundcard - $300
control surface with motorized faders - $1000
4/4 midi interface - $150
word clock generator - ? (never used one)

...for a total of $2350+. Plus, you'd have to configure each device and they would take up significantly more studio space.

This would be a great piece of gear for someone wanting to get their studio really polished and easy to manage from a single piece of hardware. It would easily replace my mixer, soundcard and fader box, as well as give me motorized faders, an ADAT interface, and give me 4 more MIDI ins and outs.

Very cool!

Take care,

Nick
