whats up with the midwest gettin no props for beats. Man check out the production On Atmosphere's new LP, A.N.T. made all the beats and my opinion the freshest sounds out. Also lookout for Binary Star(Decompose behind the boards) and AML (Athletic Mic League) if u haven't peeped, please do cuz yall are sleepin on the middle coast

There's alot out there but I gotta give a nod to:

Swizz Beats - Ruff Ryders Anthem

Timbaland - Are You That Somebody

Whoever did the "I Got Five On It" track by The Luniz

And that "Hard Knock Life" track was a banger too.

Droopz: Atmosphere are dope! Slug has been my favorite mc for a looong time, but ant uses loops to much. His beats are aight, but they get kinda boring..

Swizz beatz sucks.

Athletic mic league are also aight. At least the songs that i heard with them are dope..

um......... anyone here ever heard 1-9-9-9 (Common) produced by Hi-Tek? or what about T.R.O.Y- (Pete Rock) Timbaland's "one in a million" was groundbreaking; and- undeniably- damn, whats that song called? by DITC- i think Diamond D made it. Big L has a verse that says "you got some nice playas, they just on the wrong team (nah mean?)" ....... anyone know what i am refering to? anyhow the beat im thinking of is tops in my book, as far something to spit to goes. bottom line: every beat serves a purpose, and within different context's certain beats wouldnt hold up, even if they are "better". for instance, Jay Dee's "Aphrodisiac For The Soul" beat for Common was, in my opinion, the best track on the entire album; but "The Sixth Sense" is superior for simply spitting, and not necessarily for a song. does that make sense?

Hey...I'm really getting tired of these kind of threads where people just come up with endless lists of names, and repetitions, and don't really mention why they choose as they do, or in regards to this thread, what makes those songs so special.

I know I haven't been any better myself in the past...but can't we all agree it would be a more interesting read...

I don't know but here are my thoughts i think that the foundation hip hop producers that came b4 the 90s set the stage for patterns and sampling and probably created the dopest beat patterns etc.......Sugar hill, Eddie F-Heavy D, Spoonie G, BDP.......but asking a question like the best hip hop beat????that's like going to a candy store and asking a kid whats their favorite candy.....but look, Rockwilder -Da Rockwilda ....Wu-Tang C-R-E-A-M.........Dre-187&Next Episode........MoBB Deep (Havoc-.Hell on Earth.........BDP..The Bridge is over.......EriK B& Rakim(follow the leader, Paid in full )........But Look there are waaaay too many for me to even try and remember but look I know everyone has their favorites......but I think that WU Tang Defined a lot of Hip HOp on the level of headbanging and uptempo and very Unique beats.......Premiere and Large professor defined a lot of what people consider foundation or 90s underground hip hop destined to become Mainstream....and the Pete Rocks (Mecca and the Soul Brother..too many hot beats) & Hi Teks of the World followed.......Dre Of Course Defining the Gangster Beats and as far as South beats I don't know who started that off but maybe the Title goes to Luke and the Bass&Booty Music Dirty south Beats which are heavily influenced by Lukes style....

lets get off sugar hills nuts, ok? they had ONE song that was worth anything, they BIT caz's rhyme.... they are the most overhyped, overated of anyone in any musical genre, EVER!!!! and whats so great about next episode? did dre even make it? i mean , considering that half of what he does has a gazillion other names on the production credit! but thats beside the point.....da rockwilda was very plain and boring if you ask me...... am i the only one who thinks that he isnt all that great? shook ones pt 2 was the greatest mobb track, hands down, and one of the greatest hip hop tracks ever. what about "whatever man"? what defines greatness, what is the measurment? there is no way to do this objectively!!!!!

Oh c'mon! It IS one of the greatest of all time. It's not just the song itself, but also the period that it came out and the impact it had on rap music on a whole. I can still recite the whole 1st verse without any problem. When I heard it in the movie 8 Mile at the end, it brought back so many memories....
