number of total bars? or the number of bars in a loop?
Although 32 bars (16 bars A section , 8 bar bridge/chorus, 8 bar A section repeated) is usually the standard for a jazz tune or a popular song. In a hiphop track the number of bars you have is pretty much your decision. but it's generally a mulitple of 2, 4 or 8. peace
^^Exactly. But if you're talking about different sections, then it's usually in the 4-8 bar range for Hip-Hop.

Hey,
In modern hip hop production:
1. 36.6 seconds of some pad while the rapper says stuff like '...uh, UUGGGHH, watchew lookin' at NIGGA killa etc....'
2. 456 measures of a 4-beat loop programmed on the MPC 2000. The better producers use 8 and sometimes 16 beat loops.
3. A 2 minute skit involving the rapper's friends, some 'ho's' and a cell-phone. And an SUV.
4. Repeat step 1.

The format is usually 8(intro) 16(Verse)---Looped by like 2 or 4 or 8 bars. 8(Break) 8(Outro). It all varies on the producer. Sometime I have like 5-6 bars.....depending on the loop im sampling.
Either way it goes, its doesn't matter how many bars you got....you still can build a song around it.
