It's a modular synth, it's the kind of synths that people bought when synths first came out in the 60's. Each of those little black boxes are purchased separately, and you connect them to other black boxes with patch (guitar) cables.

Each box costs around $200.

The system in the picture is appropriately named 'The Synth of Doom'.
