This is my lo-fi lab. I do all of my preproduction in here. Not seen is my Fender P-bass. I record lo-fi in here to mini disk, some times straight, sometimes through the Studer ReVox Reel. I do tape loops or just mess with the speed of the recordings. I now have a tascam analog 8 track mixer, that I can use with the reel to dub out the recordings. My Rane mixer just got back into commission today after two weeks. I lightning storm fried my power supply, luckily Rane uses external power supplies. I then take the mini disk into the hi-fi room, my computer with a m-audio delta 44 soundcard, where I resequence and master. Peace in the middle east.

i used to do that when i had my computer set up in my living room and my turntables set up in my room (no windows in my room and no space for my turntables in living room.)

after a while it was impractical. now i just record str8t to my computer with every thing in my room and edit .

i still use the minidisc aproach when i dj clubs i record my sets with my portable minidisc recorder ( records 5 hours on 1 disc) . and " dump it in my computer and edit.

formant knows what that is, that keyboard is a protools keyboard, it got all the shortcuts on it so you dont have to be using the track ball or mouse to get around in protools that much. most major studios and post production houses got these you get around alot faster. they run about $200, i didnt care for one at first but ever since i did my last internship at song world studio out in hollywood i just had to get one.

im runing the 002 rack on a pc atholon 3100+, and im using the tascam 1884 mixer and the control surface and it works flawlessly. this is the best setup i've had, oh and i got a whisper sound booth on the way, ill add a pic once i get it set up.

si compadre y tiene todos los shortcuts like delete, undo, save, cut and paste. to me is better than the controls the digisesign has to offer like the comando and the other one. i dont think is better that the mix24 only because the mix24 has the meter bridge and the level numbers for the faders but it runs for $10,000+.
but for the money $1200 the tascam gets the job well done.

Actually just got it 4 days ago, but so far I luv it. My first controller was the evolution MK-461C, and the keys just feel too much like one of those toy casio keyboards. The semi-weighted keys of the 88es feel perfect. Also, the issue I was having with some vsti plugins and stuck notes dissappeared when I got this thing. I did test out the Keystation Pro (simulated hammer action) and it just feels too much like a real piano for me. Wouldn't feel comfortable playing various instruments/presets with that thing.

I think we both got one of best keyboard controllers out there.

See to me the keystation 88es feels more like a piano then anything else i have played in a long time. I dident get the pro becasue dont work with software and most of those knobs an faders wold have been usuless. I got the unit in today and iM loving it

Have u figured out how to turn the velocitity sensativity on and off yet. Im still trying to figure that out

Damn X, as nice as your setup is(let me re-phrase that) As nice as your studio is you dont have a sub? What I have is a nice little setup, you got a studio going brotha.

The sub I got came with the monitors a package LX4 2.1 Studiophile System, so I didnt just hand pic it for any specific reasons. But its cool im satisfied, it has 6 intergral power amps and a crossover, it picks up the frequencies well.

Thanks for the studio comment dude. Your set-up is cool too. Mine looks like a lot, but it's not. I just got tired of spending money going to big studios and coming out with crap.

And yeah, Ive been holding off on the sub for a while. I'm actually getting ready to replace my whole monitoring set-up from passive to active.

Yeah I Dj'd a little back in the day, but I was a collector of music first. Yeah I hit target up too, once you have so many records there's no place to go but up. Believe it or not, I don't use them in my production. I just haven't felt like using them, I'm already satisfied. If the Lab here was poppin with cats doing experiments I'd be more incline to do some cutting. Otherwise, I'll get around to it in my own time if ever. I'm developing a style right now, but not intentional, I'm just noticing the sound of my work.

crAzy setup Format, but where are the test tubes? Do you use any of this for your live perfermances?

Formant024
03-26-2005, 05:19 PM
No tubes bro, only in the guitar amps hehe

The guitar rack is portable, I can write stuff in logic or mpc or both, detach a few midi wires and take it on stage. Everything is modular which is higly flexible since there numerous moving of gear every week over there. Only thing not in there is the ESI2k or 4K which fits exactly underneath it since there no more racking space. There's another guitar rack just like this one which houses a A&H mixwizard console under which goes an MPC. This however can be used for hiphop, but this more the techno/electro/breaks kinda live set, for hiphop it's simply a mpc and a racksampler.

This also is just the right rig, there another keyboard corner and the studio hold the rest of the backline.

But I'll make pics in a few weeks.

@ Bastard...the mpc vs FL is different person to person. Depending on how comprehensive you are of FL...its REALLY easy..fast..productive and hands on with midi.

Right now I JUST use Ableton Live...but the mpc wouldnt "hurt"

There's little time for us to do some pre production in the studio since it's booked most of the time, which is a good thing cuz a bizz needs money... I need to take some more pics though, cuz these are just the old and new control room.

That's cool except I'm nowhere near Amsterdam. The studio is in Nijmegen but you're welcome to come in and record, haze aswell and you'll probably runn into Rigor's posse too. Nijmegen is about an 1,5 hour drive from A'dam so in US terms that's pretty close I guess lol. And if things go well then by this time next year I might be giving you a copy on wax too.

And yes haze, I think the dope will kill, I mean that what you want and dont buy in amsterdam but in nijmegen. We even smoke in the control room, just works better and most of the bands, musicians smoke anyways.

^^^^

Looking at the pic I assume your setup is placed upon the longest wall ( assuming the room is rectangular shaped). You want to point your speakers towards the farest wall possible. Set the speakerstands away from the wall and and situate the setup before the speakers, leave enough room to get behind the desk. Reason for this is to place your hotspot in a part of the speaker's wave where dynamic pressure is actually fellt by the nearfields. When you're to close to your nearfields you wont feel the speakers but just hear them, same for bass, you wont feel the bass eyeballin a nearfield 2 foot away from the speakers. In an accurately shaped room you can hear the true bass from the nearfields when standing in the corner, this as a reference on how the dynamics responses behave in the current mix.

Get the mpc from the stand, that's blasphemy, whether you dont smoke or dont booze heavily, its one incident you can prevent at hand lol! I personaly get comfy on a deep desk with the mpc tilted slightly in front of the tft, keyboard/mouse before mpc and to my left a controller keyboard ( on an L-shaped desk or on standard/pc furniture like you use now ). Last but not least, get either a set of rackmount rail or a little rack for on the desk and place the I/O -audio rack in there and seperate the powercords from the signalwiring to prevent static, humm, just noise in general.

i love the EPS i used to use it for everything before i got the MPC and i still use it now. I dont really use them together i use the EPS to make beats AND i use the MPC to make beats seperatly. I love the grittyness of the EPS aswell plus it was easy to learn, i learnt it within a wekk and i didnt have the manual. Chopping n stuff can be hard at first if your used to a waveform because u have to do it all by ear, but thats an advantage in the long run. IF u got any questions about it just PM me or whatever

Anyways..
I use FL Studio 6.0.3 Studio.Producer XXL Edition for producing the beat.
With a few plugins..
(Korg WaveStation, Korg Legacy Collection, and Sonic Synth 2 with Sample Tank2XL and a few others. )
I use Sounge Forge, VSampler 3, and CDXtract for sampling(No Viynls yet eitha.)
With my KOSS Studio HeahPhones, with my Regular Emachines Comp, i've had for the last 3 years. with my Virtual Midi Keyboard from Bombe.com. Lol..

Czech rep., woot, you one of them Czech Tek peeps ?

The construction of the booth looks good, clean work aswell but I dont see any isolating strips on the floor, wall and ceiling ? This keeps the walls from resonating or causing audible vibrations due to audible pressure, heard around the booth.
