WAV alternative for MPC1k

when i convert an mp3 song into WAV to sample into my MPC i notice it takes up alot of kilobites (ex. an 8 sec sample is 1453kb!). to boil it down, does the mpc1k only read WAV formated songs or can it read other music files that might take up less kb. cuz a 1453kb song in mp3 format is like a mintue long. and i think its a gipp with that amount i can only get 8 seconds out of it
