Was listening to some old Wu shit earlier and noticed how alot of the albums have some kind of concept behind them. Personally I think its quality when an album has some kind of theme, makes it feel more cinematic. Although other times i just wanna bump a cd full of dope shit.
Whats everyone views on em? I havent heard any hip hop concept albums lately, although I know Jay Z's new one is meant to be one.

Personally, I think you have to have a signature sound before you work on the concept or theme and a lot of cats don't really have that. I think it would be awkward to do a concept album if you don't have a signature sound, it would sound more like a mix tape with a theme. I mean you can identify a Wu track just by hearing it, before you even know who it is. I'm not saying it's not possible but having a signature sound would tie directly into doing an album with a concept or theme behind it. Another good example is Wings Of An Angel, you know his distinct sound and music after the first 2 bars.

The last concept albums I heard and brought was Disposible Arts and Long Hot Summer both by master Ace and 2 of the best slept on concept albums put out within the last 6 years. Oh and I forgot about LB The Minstrel Show but IMHO Disposible Arts was the best I heard thus far. but not everyone can do a dope concept album.

I humbly disagree with dacal...what does having a signature sound have to do with a concept? If you're the type of producer that has a signature sound "good for you". That's not a determining factor for being considered a dope producer though...not in my book anyway. That's just a way of putting a producer in a box that if they step out of, gets them bad mouthed within and outside the industry. That's my take on that..it could be a whole other topic of discussion.

Me and my group "Urban Legendz" are doing a concept album. The albums title is My Hood, My Music, My Life. It will consist of 3 chapters, so to speak, 5 tracks per chapter. My hood of course will be on some str8 street shit,bling bling, dames, drugs, sex & violence etc etc. My Music will probably be 5 tracks on some down south hip hop type shit...with topics dealing strictly with how hip hops is going or how we would like it to go. And My life will be 5 tracks on how we grew up, friends that have died, were murdered, our family & loved ones etc.

I personally don't see how you can start a project without having a blue print of the concept laid out. Sometimes for me the first couple of tracks determine the direction of the album but it's still guided by a concept and that doesn't have anything to do with a signature sound!

CONCEPT-a concept is an abstract idea or a mental symbol, typically associated with a corresponding representation in and language or symbology.

U can't argue with fact....lmbao!

Maybe lamens terms will help...wait ! it is in lamens terms...Lets try it this way...take a look at what I'm saying...1st word (Personally) - that means its in my opinion. How you got all that out of what I said is some sci-fi ish I guess. Anyways I just wanted to clear that up.

nah just kidding, for real though concept albums are dope, but sometimes people go a little to far out....ehem...outkast...speakerboxx/ lovebelow .and Common, electric circus.... but I have heard a couple dope ones... and Drama you got a good idea going with the 3 chapters....it sounds like it will work.

I actually had a couple dope concept ideas, but then it feels like i'm going a little to far out there...... like the ideas give me a fuckin headache to try and work them out the right way...lol...so i scrap them...

one of the dopest concept albums i heard lately was My chemical Romance.."the black parade"........when you get into the structure of that album, though its not hip hop, the idea of the album is dope. That is somewhat how i would like my concept album to be.

concept albums, haha well... to be honest . im in the process of finishing a concept album. its called "your friendly neighborhood cyclopean super hero." the hero is here to save you! im mixing it all down now and before i put it out officialy you guys will get to check it out first, probably in the showcase. i love taking an idea and pushing it to the limits. another thread i commented on a day or two ago about whats real and whats not. after this album, i will be the king of concept albums cuz i plan on making more. in fact, i have the beats done for another one before i even stated working on the hero project. it was called the porno investigators, but my partner in crime magnum p.i. has been battling acoholizm. so i had to backburner that and the hero was born. i gotta get back to work, i would like to get this done and re-comment on this thread to get oppinions after you have heard my idea of a concept album.....
