An MPC on your computer

Hey,

A common theme here at Illmuzik is 'should I use a PC or MPC to make beats', I would like to propose a solution which would fit somewhere in the middle and offer the best of both worlds:

The Akai MPD16 is the 16 pad triggering device that the MPC series comes with. It's about $300.

Vsampler is a software sampler that supports Akai samples, plus WAV/AIFF and others. It's about $80.

There are lots of soundcards out there, this one has ASIO drivers, good support, 1/4" 24bit 96khz balanced inputs for high-quality sampling, and you won't have to open your computer to install it. It also had a MIDI interface so that you can sync it up to external hardware synths/samplers. It's about $200.

There are lots of sequencers out there, but you will need one that supports VSTi's (like the Vsampler). It also has a multitrack recorder, virtual effects, cd burning, and other neat stuff. It's about $90.

For more serious sample editing look no further than Cool Edit 2000, you can use it to clean up (or make dirty) your samples, add high-quality dsp effects, time stretch/pitch shift, chop up drum loops to load into Vsampler and master your finished tracks before burning to cd. It's about $70.

And finally, you'll need a computer. Dell makes really nice computers and has nice support, they're always having specials and rebates. This is one of their promotions at the time of writing this post, it comes with a PIV 1.8ghz, 256mb RAM, 60gb hard drive, 17" monitor, and some other neat stuff. It goes for about $600.

All this added up equals about $1340 with the computer, about the same as a new MPC 2000...if you already have a computer, it will cost $740.

Take care,

Nick

Right on Vitaminman! I got the MPD-16 myself, off the hook. I cant imagine programming drums without that. Theyre are mad expensive but if you want the MPC rubber pads its the only way to go.

Hazawioh I think M-audio is comming out with a USB version of the OmniStudio in a couple of months. You might want to check that out too if you need good preamps with phantom power. I have the oldschool Delta66/Omni studio and I'm happy with it.

thanx for the info, but all i need is 1 i/o and a midiinterface. The audiophile sounds good to me and I think it fits my needs. I´m quite shure though that I won´t ever need the optical and digital ports at all, but I guess nowadays this feature is a must. It´s a bummer though cuz it makes the hardware more expensive.

I was just wondering why I should by a soundcard with several inputs. Can anyone tell me what I should ever need them for? I got my 16 tracks mixer linked to my soundcard and that works just fine. If I wanna sample from my turntable/tapedeck etc. I mute the other channels and stream the sounds directly into CoolEdit.
When would you ever record from several sources at the same time? I´m just curious. What soundcards do you own? How do you use them?<br>
