I think this should be in Industry Talk, but more people will see it here, and i made this post as an advice. It's 30$US, for those who has a lot of composed beats, you should send all the beat you make every 3-4 months. It took me a lot of time to get my self to do it, but 2day I decided it was time to do it. You should do it too!

you will be copyrighting how you used it in your original song....you have altered an existing work....the only way though you can legally receive any credit for having done so is written permission from the original registrant.....but you can copyright it that just sort of covers you for the idea of how you composed with that sample ya know....but to be honest when you flip a joint I really dont know how they can be really accurate tracking that because the origin owner can give as many people permission as he wants.....you have to also worry about mechanical licensing and so forth ....harry fox agency...

loll i know, but and don't know I feel that if I get stolen it will be by US rappers and I just had that feeling that it would have more weight in court if it is registered in the US

well, what I know for a fact is that your saving money if it's really only 30$US (that's under 35$), cuz it's like 65$CAN here...

Damn $65? shit. I bet your stamps are cheaper though..
Alright here is what I know:
The very moment that you make somthing it is copywritten.
You get the PA or SR forms from the library of congress to register your works,
This way if there is a question of who made the thing it has been registered and the courts
will see this.
(off topic: GD that TYME shit "adversaree" is hot Im listening to it)
People will tell you to just make a cd or tape and mail it registered mail to yourself and never open it.
Dont do that...
Do it right the first time. Like my man said every 2-3 months send as much as you want off. Title that shit "Qwerty's collection 1-01-06 thru 3-06-06" and pay the 30,35 bucks and your cool.
It doesnt matter what format you use. Tape cd whatever. SR stands for sound recording PA is preforming arts. Far as I can tell SR for just beats PA for lyrics and beats. (correct me someone if Im wrong)
Sampling: I love this site and the Beat This! and Battle That! stuff because I dont sample because probably like Tree I am paranoid of getting sued and I am cheap as shit(Not gonna pay shit to clear 'em) so to hear all the cool ass sampling ideas is like the first time you see porn ,you know its wrong but MM thats hot.
HARRY FOX AGENCY is a sampling clearing house. I got frustrated a few years ago trying to navigate them and just flipped whatever I sampled to a level that no one could tell ever what it was.
Canada find out how they do it and start a more user friendly one up there, and invite me to your yaht party.

What I would like to know ,and someone should start a thread, is ok I'm with BMI paid for signed and all. Now what??
Who do I contact for questions? How do I register my works? I tried the site but email contacts never write back.

the problem is man, this really doesn't do as much as people like to think it does. There are so many ways to jack a beat its not even funny. Don't think that having some slip with your name on it in DC means people won't steal your beats, trust me.

And most of the time, they will get away with it.

Somewhat true.

Basically if you composed a beat and you want to copyright the actual composition of the beat, then you should fill out form PA, (Performing Arts) because you performed it that way.

If you want to copyright that exact recording that you made at that precise time, then you'd fill out form SR.

My teachers told me to do both, but that's just twice as much money.

Here's what the copyright office says about it:

When to Use Form SR (Sound Recordings)

Use Form SR for registration of published or unpublished sound recordings, that is, for registration of the particular sounds or recorded performance.

Form SR must also be used if you wish to make one registration for both the sound recording and the underlying work (the musical composition, dramatic, or literary work). You may make a single registration only if the copyright claimant is the same for both the sound recording and the underlying work. In this case, the authorship statement in Space 2 should specify that the claim covers both works.

Form SR is also the appropriate form for registration of a multimedia kit that combines two or more kinds of authorship including a sound recording (such as a kit containing a book and an audiocassette).

When to Use Form PA (Performing Arts)

For registration purposes, musical compositions and dramatic works that are recorded on disks or cassettes are works of the performing arts and should be registered on Form PA or Short Form PA. Therefore, if you wish to register only the underlying work that is a musical composition or dramatic work, use Form PA even though you may send a disk or cassette.

OK hyp this is where I get confused.
Props on actually rewriting all that by the way.
I have an albumn completed. There is one main artist but I have two other artists featuring
What the hell form do I use even though the featuring are on say 2 songs out of 18?
Do I do 2 different pa registrations?
Is it saying that using PA I can send in the entire completed cd?
Or do I do that with SR?
Please help end this confusion 1nce and for all.

Yes, you would either need 2 separate PA forms or 2 SR forms. If they contain sampled works, and it's an album, then I would use form SR.

Say there are 4 artists on the album, but they appear separately on many tracks. For this example, lets say their names are John, Mike, Chris, and Alex. Lets assume that John makes all the beats, to make this easier.

Say there are 18 songs on the album. John and Mike are on 4 together, Chris and Alex are on 5 songs together, John, Mike, Chris and Alex have 3 songs together, Mike, Chris and Alex have 3 songs together, John has 2 solo tracks, and Alex has 1 solo track.

This is how it would break down:

SR Form 1: (4 songs) John and Mike
SR Form 2: (5 songs) Chris and Alex
SR Form 3: (3 songs) John, Mike, Chris, Alex
SR Form 4: (3 songs) Mike, Chris, Alex
SR Form 5: (2 songs) John
SR Form 6: (1 song) Alex
Total: (18 songs), 6 Forms, $180.00

However, if you wanted to divide it up by the group, it's only $45 each for the group, and if the beatmaker wants in, it's $36 each.

I think there are loopholes, but I can't guarantee that it would give you the copyright protection that you need to hold up in court if someone were to steal your music.

Hope this helped.
