Turning a bassline into a lead

Sometimes i hear a bassline and know it would make an excellent lead melody. Has any1 got any tips on turning a bassline into a synth type sound?

take the bass and mix with another wave, like a saw, then mess around with the resonance and filters....you can make anything you want from a sine or saw, and mixing with other waveforms or distortion fx...if you start with a tone generator you can even take that and mix it with a sine and mess with the filters, such as res, attack cutoff and frequency, get a program like soundforge to mix them.....
