Introduction

It took daring courage, and maybe a bit of luck, to bring to the family of IllMuzik this round table exclusive interview, attended by a few of Ill's members, which brings to us an exploration into the mind of The Man Behind The Mask, also known as Fade The GateKeeper, the one who gave us the addiction that is IllMuzik.com.

Krzy K: What lead you 3 years ago that inspired you to create IllMuzik.com?

I started making websites back in 1998, when I was heavily into DJ'ing (battles, scratching, etc). My first site was "DJ Fade's Skratch Site". Anyway, over time I was getting really good at web design and it became a huge hobby for me since I've always been into computers (loading up Karate Champ on my Commodore 64 - c: kchamp run). LOL. Something like that. So in early 2000, I was trying to focus a lot of my attention on producing, and I was looking for a site that catered to Hip-Hop producers, that's when I found ughh.com's forums. I started posting there once in a while but eventually I got really sick of the attitudes there. If I posted a beat, their typical response (if I got any feedback at all) was, "You need more change-ups. Your snare is garbage, get rid of it". What kind of feedback is that? Then it got to the point where I was almost afraid to post there at all because most likely someone would reply with "Fuck you, hahahaha".

So, instead of putting up with that and since there were no sites at all dedicated solely to Hip-Hop production, I decided to do something about it. I thought to myself, "Hey it would be cool if I could create a site, or even a community for Hip-Hop producers". So I did. At first it was very tough because when you first start a website, nobody knows about it. It takes a long time before word spreads across the internet, and the most challenging thing is keeping the site updated regularly. I had a few people coming to the site, but nothing compared to today. I remember when there would be around 1 post PER WEEK on the forums! Now there's probably over 100 posts a day. It's come a long way.

Mr. Messenger: What does IllMuzik mean to you and what are your master plans with this music thing?

I've always looked at IllMuzik as a service of sorts. A place where producers from all over the globe can come together and chill with one another, make friends, learn some cool production tips, and have the chance to get exposure. If you look at other Hip-Hop sites, there's lots of interviews with well known producers, but does IllMuzik have that? No. Why? Because I want to do things differently. That's what it all boils down to - IllMuzik is different than the rest in so many ways. Do we let people talk shit in the forums? No. Are all the members able to send an email or PM to me? Yeah go ahead. How many other Hip-Hop sites are like that? None, as far as I know.

As for my "master plan" with this music thing - I had plans of being in the industry as a music producer but those plans didn't work out. Now I see myself sort of getting into the industry as a website owner/webmaster. I want to make IllMuzik THE place for Hip-Hop producers, and slowly but surely I'll keep adding stuff to the site to make it grow, and guide it into a positive direction so that one day major record labels will look to us first when they need some fresh talent to make music for an upcoming album.

Krzy K: Deep.

DueceMade Entertainment: Have you ever considered startin up a production company?

Yes, I thought about it a long time ago, especially when I first started producing. Back then I was totally focused on having a career as a producer in the music business but over time things happened and it didn't work out that way for me, so now here I am helping other producers around the world learn and get exposure, something that is lacking on other sites.

AfriqueDeluxe Breaks In: "If IllMuzik became a production company, u can count me in."

Tricky Spinz: So do you mind sharing with us your edumacation (deliberately misspelled). Where you grew up and went to school? How were your grades? Have you attended any institution higher than High School, mind sharing with us?

I grew up in Montreal, moved around a few times when I was a kid, but stayed mainly in Montreal. I finished high school (wow) and my grades were always average. Some classes I did horribly in, like Chemistry. It's not that I couldn't do the stuff, I just didn't WANT to. That shit didn't interest me. I swear, in those classes I'd be going over some Public Enemy lyrics while the teacher's trying to show us molecules, etc. Yawn. After high school I went to college for about a year and that was it. It's a LONG story, but basically I spent a lot of time after high school going back and forth between here and San Antonio, TX where my father lives. It was kind of like I had two homes, but during all this traveling, I wasted a lot of time. Time I could have been spending with girls. Stupid sexy teenage girls.

King Corruption: IllMuzik Records?

I would love to. But like I've always said, these things take lots of money. Until I become extremely successful with the site (popularity-wise and financially), only then will I think about it. It would be a dream to have a label, and I'm not saying "no", I'm just saying that it's not on my mind right now.

TrustNo1: Is "IllMuzik" deliberate, or just a spelling mistake?

It's deliberate. At first I was going to call it something like "b-creative.com" (don't ask why). Then I figured it needed to sound like something related to Hip-Hop, so I was going to call it "illbeats.com" but figured that the word "beats" was being used too much, and again, I just wanted to be different. So I came up with "illmusic", then freaked it with a "z" and a "k", which confused a lot of people at first, because they kept forgetting how the name of the site was spelled! But when you think about it, the word "ill" can be used in so many ways. IllMittens, IllPussy, IllSounds, you name it. The one thing I don't like is that since last year (when IllMuzik started to get really popular), I noticed on other sites that people were using the word "ill" a lot. Some guy selling a sample CD called "illdrums", some other guy using it in his website name, and most people just using "ill" in their vocabulary when posting. I'm not saying that I own the word "ill", but it just seems like it's been used a lot over the past year. I'm not going to name any names, but you know who you are. By the way, I check other sites occasionally, so I see ALL that goes on! LOL.

Krzy K: Ill Oven Mittens, good one, LOL.

Krzy K: What's a day in the life of Fade like, all details please?

Wake up, open up a can of Diet Coke (my addiction), fire up the PC and login to the site. Check to see if anyone acted up overnight. Ahahah, but really, I spend most of my day doing stuff related to the site, or working on other sites (I'm the webmaster at Dynamic Producer, or I'm working on other computer programs, trying to learn different things so I can build up my knowledge of certain computer languages. Eventually I'd like to get a full time job doing either web design or programming.

Krzy K: What's a typical weekend like for the master of IllMuzik.com?

Actually, the weekend is when I spend most of my time maintaining the site! Other than that, I just try to hangout or go shopping, go see a movie, or rent one. Pretty quiet actually.

N.U.G.: What are your top 10 favorite albums?

Hmph, that's a tough one! Off the top of my head and in no particular order:

  • OC - Jewelz
  • Mobb Deep - The Infamous
  • Raekwon - Only Built For Cuban Linx
  • Boogie Down Productions - Return Of The Boom Bap
  • The Roots - Illadelphhalflife
  • De La Soul - 3 Feet High And Rising
  • Gangstarr - Daily Operation
  • Compton's Most Wanted - Music To Drive By
  • NWA - Straight Outta Compton
  • Ice-T - Original Gangster
Odyessy: Yo Fade, describe tha wackest track you ever heard?

I can't really say that one track in particular is wack, but I will say that most of today's stuff is totally garbage. Like when I first saw/heard Lil John, I swear I thought it was a joke! I really thought it was just some guy dressing up and mocking rap music. I had no idea that was real. And the music! Oh man that's some of the worst shit I've ever heard. Actually, come to think of it - what really set off this whole wack era that we're going through is when I heard Juvenile's "Ha". LOL, me and a friend of mine couldn't stop laughing at the video because we thought this guy looked like an actual retarded person! Our first reaction was, "Man, this shit will never sell". I guess we were wrong.

Odyessy: Describe tha tightest track ya ever heard and by who - "IllMuzik only"?

The tightest I ever heard on IllMuzik... uh oh! I don't want to piss anyone off, LOL. Well first off, I don't always get a chance to check out the Showcases, so I'm going to have to base this decision on the competitions we've had so far, and I've heard so many good beats on IllMuzik, there's so much talent. Probably Afriquedeluxe's beat "BeatWhat" from his September 2003 win. Something about that beat, it's like it's forcing you to nod your head. You can't listen to that beat without feeling something. Plus, you have to turn it up!

DueceMade Entertainment: Are you really Jason?

No, but I'm just a huge fan of slasher flicks. The stuff from the late 70's and early 80's is the best. The thing about Jason is that he's unstoppable! Plus I like watching stupid teenage camp counselors get slaughtered. Actually, I like watching everyone get slaughtered by Jason.

DueceMade Entertainment: I have heard somewhere that you make beats in tha underworld, is that true?

LOL, nah. Although for the past year my beats have been of the eerie type, stuff you would hear in a horror movie.

Krzy K: I have heard somewhere you have a shed at the back of your house behind the willow tree, past the rock where the birds are always singing, where you take and uh... allegedly slaughter the evicted members of IllMuzik. Is this true?

I wish! I always keep a professional attitude when dealing with anyone on the site, even if someone tells me to "Fuck off, eat a dick". Why stoop to their level? I'm always fair with everyone, but it seems like some people don't like to follow a few simple rules, and they're not used to being warned if they slip up. After a while I get fed up and they get banned. Oh, the PM's and emails I've received from some of these people! If you guys only knew. I should post them one day so we can all get a good laugh. I just don't understand how someone can get so caught up in something on a website. My advice to those people: if you're taking things so seriously that you end up sending me a nasty message, you REALLY need a life. Push yourself away from your computer, get up, and go OUTSIDE. Do you remember where OUTSIDE is? Y'know, where LIFE is? Jeez.

Krzy K: Are you scary in real life or is it just the power that you have on the site?

Nah, I'm a very laid-back guy. I look at things from a level-headed point of view, and I don't tolerate stupidity. I'm fair, but if you piss me off then get away from me and stop wasting my time. Like, if you ignore the rules in the forums, and do something stupid - go away!

DueceMade Entertainment: How long have you been tha undead?

Okay this is getting stupid now, lol.

DueceMade Entertainment: Will you ever show your true identity?

Yes, this is me breaking into Vitaminman's truck:

Sammy Beats: I was wondering what's your favorite ice cream and junk food?

Favorite ice cream would have to be Cookies 'N Cream, and favorite junk food... probably poutine. It's a Quebec specialty - french fries/cheese curds/gravy. Mmmmm. Hey, don't knock it until you try it!

RigorMortis interrupts: Yo sup man, I am a great fan of the Simpsons, so I want to know who is your favorite Simpsons character? What is your favorite Simpson episode?

That's hard to say! But I would have to say any episode that involves Homer in a crisis, which is almost all of them. And my favorite character is of course, Homer.

RigorMortis: Do you surf the web for Simpson porn?

Uhhh, no. Although years ago I saw a picture of Barney doing Wilma from the Flintstones.

RigorMortis: Have you ever made a beat in honor of Groundskeeper Willy? 'Cause I am planning on doing that.

So basically, have I sampled the bagpipes? No. Maybe one day if I find a nice bagpipe loop, I'll chop it up!

Odyssey: And most of all describe tha craziest "bitch " you've ever been with?

I can't really say because I stay away from the craziness. I just try not to approach any that look like psycho's, which is most women today. So basically, "bitches" aren't high on my priority list right now.

Krzy K: Is it possible for you to post a picture of you not breaking in to something you don't own?

Yeah here's another:

Krzy K: Is IllMuzik.com all you live for? I bet not so what else does the Gatekeeper live for?

Movies. I love either renting them or going to the theater. Something about watching a movie, it kind of takes me away from where I am and for those 2 hours I forget about all my problems. When I'm on my computer it's usually for IllMuzik, or I'm looking at porn. Oh yeah, I make beats too, LOL.

Krzy K: If there is one thing you would like to change or make better of IllMuzik.com, what would it be?

I would like to make the whole site database-driven. Right now parts of the Artists section is tied into a database, and I'm working on making the rest of the site like that because it will help make the pages more interactive. I would like an IllMuzik radio station, a weekly show where someone plays beats from various members. Keep it all up in the family!

Krzy K: Are you aware you're the leader of a great revolution? If there could be one thing the members could do to show their appreciation, what would it be?

LOL, it's kind of weird. I'm sure lots of people look at me as someone doing great things, but honestly what I'm doing is just normal to me. I don't really look at it as a sort of "revolution". Sure, I would love for IllMuzik to overpower the major record labels and force them to hire some of the members on this site, but for now I'm just doing what I do best, which is to help others. That's all it is - I'm helping others because I like to. I'm not some super-producer. I'm sure a lot of members on IllMuzik have spent tons of more time in a studio than I ever will. I'm sure most of them have more gear than I have. I'm sure a lot of them know more about music than I do. I'm just like everyone else on the site - I make beats. It just so happens that I also created IllMuzik.

To show their appreciation? Just help out when you can. Whether it's donating $1, writing an article, or promoting IllMuzik if you visit other sites, that's all. Oh, and buy your copy of Ill Compilations Vol. 1! We need your support to get this off the ground.

Krzy K's Ending Statement

I remember not too long ago, I thought about building my own site like IllMuzik and the thought that came through my mind at first was that people who made websites were like some super nerd, with knowledge of everything. In the end I discouraged myself as I would every other project in the past that I would decide to tackle. Until I found IllMuzik and later met Fade, and to tell no lie, my first reaction and thoughts were he was like God and I was like a spec somewhere. I remember looking at the ads for a writer for IllMuzik and would think, I wasn't important nor would he care to let me write for the site. No, it wasn't like that at all, through time I got to know him, and to my surprise he was just your average guy doing something he truly loves.

What could be more inspirational than that, it's as if now I have the thought ever present in the back of my mind. If he can do all this, why can't I? If I stop for a moment to look at my accomplishments so far: I have improved my beat making knowledge, my productions skills have surpassed average, I have started my own production company, I have built my own website which I've redesigned several times just because now I can, even my penmanship of this interview stands evident of how much an impact he has made to my life and I truly believe this stands true to all of Ill's members - IllMuzik is not only a place to be part of a family, it's a place to feel and be inspired to aspire to even greater heights.
