Hey, PAT,
after your chat message about the outcome, I'd thought i'd swing by and drop my views on the beats (in particular on why MicroDot's beat may have won)
I can understand why you may feel shortchanged - hey many of us do here anytime we lose a battle (many times very justified too!!! at least I'm sure we all think)
"Ronin"
You have a really cool beat here, not sure how much is composed/sampled, but going to just assume as compsoed; really cool beat musically, captures that ninja, samurai far east vibes well, and has beautiful switch ups. Musically this is a really cool beat, and sounds like good skill went into this compositionally.
"Torse Hankiliser"
A relatively 'simple' beat in appearance, but has a fucking shit tonne of character and emotion in the aesthetics of the beat.
$ My opinion on why MicroDotCotton's beat may have won;
This beat has a tonne of fucking character and emotion with its gritty grainy texture, which couples well with its very droney sound. Me personally, I listen to this beat and I hear a really gritty grimey agressive rapper on this. (can't pull out any underground names) but I can imagine Busta Rhymes on this, with a real raw, distressed vocal take. Would be an absolutely fucking fierce record.
Comparatively, whilst your beat has a fairly clear/clean mix, I think the mix lacks a certain boldness - musically the beat has a lot of emotion, especially that Erhu/bowed instrument; but whilst musically it carries emotion, I think the mix could have done more to really match and bring out that emotion.
It's this emotion/aesthetic which I think potentially led to Microdot's beat winning.
Really cool beat, I hope this helps give any clarity or perhaps even inspires thought for your next beats etc.
Great beats @ both
Love
