Just a heads up: it doesn't matter what you use!

I remember the infamous "Hardware vs. Software" debate even from when IllMuzik first started.

Seeing some conversations recently, I thought I'd just give a heads up to everyone, especially newbies:

It doesn't matter what you use!

Why? Because it comes down to YOU and your brain. I remember we had a member on here way back, he was 14 and making beats on an old computer with whatever software he had. Guess what? He was winning a bunch of Beat This competitions. And back then they were tough (not to take away from the ones competing today).

Another member used to make beats just with Cool Edit Pro (I still don't know how). For those that don't know, it's now called Adobe Audition.

When you look at the way Hip Hop beats were made in the past, it was much harder than it is today. With today's technology, it's much simpler and quicker. You can literally take a bunch of loops from software and drag and drop them into a time line. Try finding those loops on an old record and then adding other sounds on top. And try doing it with only 10 seconds of sampling time.

This isn't to bash today's software and hardware, not at all. But just never forget that it's much easier today and the possibilities are endless. So there's no excuse to make beats, no matter what you have.

Even for myself, there was a time when I didn't have any gear except for an old computer with Cakewalk Pro Audio. Guess what? I still made beats! I just did it. It wasn't a great process but I still worked at it. Oh, and my workspace? I was staying at someone else's place and the only space I could get was in a tiny kitchen LOL. The fridge was literally right behind me and the stove to my left. I could probably make a meal while making beats!

Anyway, just thought I'd vent a bit and remind everyone to just make beats with whatever you have. The more hardware or software you have doesn't mean your beats will be amazing. Just work at it!

Here's a beat being made with some old school gear:

Very appropriate post considering the recent influx of gear threads and people asking which sampler to buy like it's 1996 or something. It's just important not to jump across different methods/platforms much and master one DAW and/or sampler of choice. It's not hard to pick something good and worthwhile unless you really cheap out.

Well I've seen it on other sites where it seems old gear is getting popular again. I think that's due to more people wanting to get away from the computer screen and wanting a standalone machine.
