Yea good cables are a must have. my mic cable was 50 dollars but the dude sold it to me for 30 since i just bought a 300 dollar mic...lol and my monitor cables were Hosa but i kept picking up radio stations so i switched to the gold Carver cables and been good since. -

it could be a few things for ex. sonars audio engine to sound forges engine sound forge just be more robust... plus the voulume on sonar is default to where you have tweaked in sound forge. try boostin the vol use trim and vol slap a comp or eq on it and play around what you got to lose? -

well what pre is it ,who made it, and is ur turn table on a mixer. do you have latest drivers for your pre? -

im not too sure but this happened to me once and it was that i had the samples 16bit and my sonar set up was set to 24 bit. wierd volume changes. but it may not be your case.
