"Long Way 2 Go" Strings?
Use an EQ, Cut 63Hz (a lot), same with 250Hz, boost 1500Hz (a lot) and 3000Kh (dont boost it to much), Cut a bit at 5000Kh and cut 8000Kh (a lot). That should give you the telephone effect. :) ~NW~- NobleWordz

Well there is no rule. One thing to do is play the beat and mute random stuff, that way you can listen to see if its has a place in you beat. You have to ask yourself, is this important to the beat? Sound Placement (!!! I NEED HELP ON THIS ASAP !!!!)
You use pan and levels to set placement. Like you want a synth to sound like its behind everything, you turn down the level. If you want the hi-hats to sound like its coming from the side pan it. ~NW~- NobleWordz

Melody v.s. Beat
Depends what you make. Like an R&B beat would have to have a good melody because thats where the focus is (IMO). But a Crunk beat would need hard drums and a simple melody. I'm not great with melody's so I start with my drums and build on top of them. ~NW~- NobleWordz

too stiff?
Yeah I think its worth it, it takes a while to adjust to using pads, but when you get into the grove its a great tool. I don't just use it for drums, I use it to play chops and even synths. If you do get one make sure you order a longer USB cable because cable that comes with it is kinda...- NobleWordz
