    You will know you need a pre amp when you find the headphones arent loud enough. High Ohm headphones need a more powerful input level, some interfaces/mixers have enough, some dont.

    That bass seems to be an octave too high, there is no substance to the kick, there is nothing filling out the low end. Leaves it feeling midsy. Sounds a bit busy with the beat and the bass, and it does get a bit repetitive. Would probably sound a lot better if something filled in the low end...

    Best headphones for mixing?

    Having used both the Sennheiser HD280's and the Beyerdynamic DT990's I would recommend the DT's. 990's or 770's, you might need a headphone pre amp with them as they have high ohm's. But like @TWU I find them very detailed in the high end, and much more comfortable to wear for extended periods...

    I like the way the kick really thumps, sort of thing I could see Kool Keith on, very different style of beat. The Dr Who type synth that comes in around 1:30 sounds dope to me.

    I like the beat, it shows a good grasp of the basics. It progresses nicely, changes up and stays interesting. The drums are interesting. If this is just your second beat then I am impressed. What DAW are you using?

    Sampling is fucking hard

    I find in the bass frequencies it can be a little bit harder to distinguish between semi tones. If its any instrument in a higher register I can pretty much find the scale in seconds. I always recommend piano though as its tone is very clean for sonebody still training their ears.
