AKG K72 Low end throwing me the fuck off

this shit is weirding me out

so my brother found some bankrupt studio that was selling everything cheap n bagged the headphones. rn the setup is an AKG K72 connected to the M-track duo, and the sound I'm getting has so much low end and low-mids that it gives me a headache. I feel like I hear more details down there, but I can't see myself listening to or producing anything in this sonic environment.

is ts normal? like is that the point of this equipment, as in it's strictly meant to be used for mixing/mastering and not listening to music? if so, I guess I'll have to plug the afghanistani earphones back in and listen to/produce music with that again lmao. I guess right before going for mastering I can plug it in and fix some details with it, maybe balance shi out?

sometimes things like that can happen, ihad headphones bass was a lot but enjoyable but some records if they hit the boxy tone it could get strainy. Is it like that for most records?

Maybe also you're used to not hearing bass, especially that close to your ears?

Are you able to EQ your output? could maybe low shelf it or something

I think you just need to get the sand out of the headphones.

But yeah, do you mean you're just not used to hearing those frequencies? Like going from a dollar store earpod to an AKG studio headphone?

lol funnily enough the packaging did have some sand-ish thing in it for some reason

yea it might be that, Idk. I used to work with a detox beats thingy and it was pretty bass heavy but that was years ago. I still feel like that had more high end presence than this akg thing tho.

maybe. it was like that for everything tbh. at some point I tweaked AIMPs EQ and made it play things with like fuckin... +12db high end and that made it feel normal but, I'm not sure if that's a healthy approach lol. everything (especially vocals) sounds... kinda muffled.

okay so I started the day with +15db high end, I slowly took it down to +3 for everything past 2k. kinda making my ears get used to the thingy. not sure how well this is gonna go in the long run tho...

might be a better idea to cut the lows rather than boost the highs, or just play enough commercial stuff on them until you get a good idea how they "should" sound and get more used to it.

EDIT: Just found this on Audiosciencereview.com specific PEQ for AKG K72 to even them out...
I took the liberty to create a PEQ for you. This is equalized to the IEF curve from measurements perfomed by Crinacle.
Preamp: -11.8 dB
Filter 1: ON PK Fc 23 Hz Gain -6.6 dB Q 0.800
Filter 2: ON PK Fc 44 Hz Gain -1.7 dB Q 2.000
Filter 3: ON PK Fc 66 Hz Gain 7.3 dB Q 2.000
Filter 4: ON PK Fc 100 Hz Gain -3.1 dB Q 1.700
Filter 5: ON PK Fc 140 Hz Gain -7.9 dB Q 1.100
Filter 6: ON PK Fc 870 Hz Gain -2.5 dB Q 2.000
Filter 7: ON PK Fc 1200 Hz Gain 1.5 dB Q 2.000
Filter 8: ON PK Fc 2400 Hz Gain 12.0 dB Q 0.900
Filter 9: ON PK Fc 6800 Hz Gain -8.7 dB Q 2.000
Filter 10: ON PK Fc 11000 Hz Gain 10.8 dB Q 2.000

well I did that but with a trick where like, I listened to high end shi all day n just brought down the EQ stuff until I disabled it completely n my ears got used to it. I still feel a need for more highs deep down but, that's okay. I'll definitely be producing stuff with a high shelf boost on the master from the beginning tho. it used to be just a clipper, now that too.

wait I'm not sure if I understand this. how is that meant to be applied?

na I got that part. I mean how is it like... applicable. is it the settings u need on everything u listen to to make the gear sound like... "standard"?
Its to flatten the overall frequency response to compensate for the inadequacies of those particular headphones, where they have resonances and dips in the frequency curve.
Have a peq with those settings at the end of your master channel chain for monitoring and mixing purposes, then turn it off before exporting a final mix. Just remember to turn it off as it only applies to those headphones.

holy- I didn't know things like this were normal. I thought once you get "professional" output you just trust the gear. those are some wild freqs too like, -9.7 then +10? jesus.
wouldn't that weird my ears out if like, the music I listen to isn't going through allat when I hear it?

ty btw.

The thing with studio monitors, either headphones or actual speakers, you get what you pay for and may have to compensate, hence these eq settings.
From what I take from your beat in the last beat this, I think you got used to your last headphones, I thought the mix was really on point. Unless you mixed it on the new ones, in which case you are already doing something right

Mileage may vary and thoughts vary.

But basically it's to correct the frequency response of the headphones.

People do this with high end monitors too with trinnov tuning.

With headphones however... bear in mind 2 things;
- many headphones might not have identical production runs so your same headphone might vary to the next same one
- ear canal resonances. Your ear canal will respond differently to headphones than 2Gs or mine.

That all impacts things.
