Beat Fight #432

A cold, techy, industrial, atonal beat, precise with ample negative space, and one that is full, saturated, organic, and slippery on the grid. Both styles appeal to me greatly, despite their differences. It's a tough choice because it's really hard to say that one of these beats is worse. In the end, I will vote for @Kane the MOD because it seems to me that he took a bit more of a risk, or maybe it's just my mood today, but I also believe that a tie would be a fair outcome.

hey @Kane the MOD, surely because I know you are Swiss, when I look at your new pic, I think: this is the good looking brother of H.R. Giger! Definetely I have to come to visit one of his museum bars!

@Armani - I appreciate going outside the realms of convention and the use of unique/interesting sounds. Snare is perfect level of moist lol. I don't quite care for that kick though. This intellectual, industrial stuff isn't my vibe - BUT - as I listened a couple times there was one thing I did genuinely appreciate. How you managed to use SFX/Glitches to build out a rhythm AND an underlying "texture" of melody. The sounds all work well and generate something that can actually be hummed back. Cool exercise in sound.

@Kane the MOD - I like that you try things and experiment not only with sounds, but grooves and feel. Unquantized drums are really tricky to do, and I think you missed the mark on it here. I don't want to sound too judgmental - because I certainly couldn't pull it off - but I think when doing unquantized, you should focus on whether it's pushing or pulling. Is the groove leaning forward and giving the track as whole a forward tilting feel? Or, is it a bit more relaxed and slight behind the grid letting it breathe and slouch back more? Here, it sounds like it's trying to do with both, so you end up with an unnatural space between drum hits.

I did like the sample, and you know I love me some Rick bass!

I didn't realize that it was the unquantized drums, I thought it was just out-of-time samples. Anyway what @BiggChev mentioned about unquantized drums relates more to the human feel, that tension typical of J Dilla's work. What I liked here, though, isn't that kind of atmosphere. It's more about how the beat has a sort of "stutter" or "off-kilter" feel that then realigns at the start of the measure. If you take that away, it just becomes another standard beat like the others.
