What is the origin of St. Patrick's Day besides wearing green and getting drunk?
Well its to celebrate saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Saint Patrick's Day is held on the date of his death.
Long story short, he was captured in England by Irish Raiders and taken to Ireland as a slave, few years later he escaped back to England. He must have became attached because he returned as a missionary. Also they say he rid Ireland of snakes and serpents, that's just a legend.
Basically he was made a saint for spreading the word of god through Ireland.
