The nation of Jamaica has instituted an island-wide ban of all music which glorifies violence or sexual activity. The ban, which became official earlier this week, is targeted at quelling the growing dancehall trend called "daggering," where participants stimulate sexual intercourse on the dance floor. The style was popularized by dancehall star Mr. Vegas, who released a song and video of the same name last June. Under the new regulation, all music with lyrics detailing murder, arson, rape, and gun violence cannot be Furthermore, DJ's are not even allowed to be play censored versions of songs, as the intent and suggestive nature of the tracks would still be discernible. As the country's most popular music genre, dancehall stands to be the most affected by the new ruling. However, the decree will also limit the accessibility of Soca and Hip-Hop on the island. Hip-Hop has strong roots with the Caribbean island due to Jamaican-born DJ Kool Herc, who helped launch the genre of Hip-Hop in the 70s, after migrating to New York City in the late 1960s.

I love the old slackness tunes, but the new gun tunes and all that, can't care less about... still to put a ban is a little extreme.

Well, if I read right, if it's about felonies, it's not acceptable... all music with lyrics detailing murder, arson, rape, and gun violence... that leaves a whole lot to listen to...

(Guess they'll be stuck with old school riddims until they get new stuff to put up...

It won't stop much over here in terms of what I'm doing. We have an entire library of classic dancehall videos, and since a lot of the international reggae that we hear in the states is distributed through NYC and not controlled by Jamaica, artists won't stop making the music we have come to know them for.

Dancehall is a movement, this ruling will just bring it underground which will inspire a new variation.

Damn that sucks. Did they just realize what Dancehall is all about? That sucks. I think artists should be free to do what they want on stage. Even if it's daggering a chick on stage lol. It's not like people didn't expect it to happen when they go to the shows. Do they expect a Celine Dion performance? Hell no!
