i got a hitachi 320 gig i/o magic external and i love it.
my maxtor is FINISHED and everything on it is gone except for my folders but which are all empty, im holdin on to it in hopes that i can get it restored in the future but it has severely hurt my beat game because all the tracks that i made on fruityloops ant be eq'd or tracked or reformatted, i gotta pray that these artist will take the beats as is or hopefully i can save myself wit a little cut and paste but the main thing is now explainin this to people who are gonna be like "yeah whatever, whos u steal this beat from?"

I've had my exernal Maxtor (500 gig) for few months now and nothing has happened yet... tho I've heard that Maxtors crash often, so maybe I should get a smaller drive for backups. But this one was for 100 euros so I had to get it :D

Every Maxtor hard drive I've owned has died. Stay far away from them...They don't last long.

Me too, Maxtor sucks huge donkey balls. I had a drive a few years back and in no time I would hear some loud clicking, then I checked the status of the drive and I was getting errors, then I would have trouble booting up. Stick with Western Digital. I haven't tried Seagate yet though.

I've been using a Maxtor HD for around 4 years now and ii have yet to have a problem with them.

All Hard-Drives act up though as they aren't ment to last longer than a certain amount of time, i can't quite remember there usual lifespan as i have'nt got the article here which speaks on all of the formats (i.e CDs/DVDs, DATs, HDs, Tapes ect...) but i'll see if i can find it out to post up as a new topic as it's quite interesting to know.

I have a pair of Maxtor drives right now. 320GB and a 160GB. My 40GB is by WD. They're all ATA drives and they work fine. Granted, I just got the Maxtors within the last few months, so they had better work fine.

Losing data is not something I take lightly, having lost 2 EP's and countless tracks to drive failures. You guys who lost your work need to start burning your stuff to CD or DVD and storing those backups properly. Backing up to another hard drive is OK in the short term, but realistically your chances of losing your work is just as high doing that as it is by not backing up at all. This past weekend, I dusted off backup CD's that I made back in '99 and pulled tracks and design work off of them that I had long since forgotten about. That could be any number of you if you burn your shit.

Keep DVD backups of your work. And... Seriously... If you can afford to do it, back up to tape as well. Tapes have a 20-30 year shelf life, if you're truly serious about your work, that's where you back it up. Screw all this other shit. Tape is proven like nothing else. Yeah the shit is slow (23GB/hr), but at least you can recover your work. Backup to DDS-4 (DAT) at a rate of 40GB (compressed) for $7 per tape. AIT and DLT cost more, Travan is cheap but holds far less.

For those that recommended Glyph and Lacie hard drives... Are you aware that they do not manufacture hard drives at all? Those same drives that y'all are complaining about just might be the same drives in those Glyph and Lacie backup units.
