All told, 114 positions — 11 percent of the league’s work force — were eliminated, primarily in New York and New Jersey, from nearly every division, including marketing, community relations, player programs, broadcasting and information technology.

“The layoffs are not a direct result of the lockout but rather a response to the same underlying issue — that is, the league’s expenses far outpace our revenues,” the N.B.A. spokesman Mike Bass said.

The layoffs were framed as part of a broader effort to cut expenses by $50 million in all areas of the business.

Who knew the league was so messed up? Not I.

Reading the article, its almost like the lockout was a way for them to shut down and freeze alittle spending (as well as negotiate)

But I dont understand how something like the NBA could be at a place were they need to lay off. They should have a torrent of revenues that would make this impossible. Unless the suits are so greedy they mess up the ratio...?

If this is the case then it's years in the making with bad planning and a bad business model. It's a shame that this can happen in the NBA, it's so huge all around the world. Just imagine a lockout happening when Jordan was in the league with the Bulls! There would have been riots LOL.

Of course the suits are greedy but the main issue is that the league is saturated with teams right now. The average citizen in small markets simply doesn't have the dough to buy NBA tickets. The Pacers and Kings averaged roughly 13,000 spectators per game in 2010-2011! Of course the great recession didn't help. The league would be much more profitable if it contracted (20 squads instead of 30).

True. lol the coarse of history would be different

Ahh, that makes sense.

Never thought of that. What are the chances of this happening? lol

It's crazy when you have two players on a team of 10 players making 100million over like 10 years....or damn near close to it......... Merchandising is not what it used to be because there's no MJ (which is another reason why i think he's the greatest professional athlete of all time). People aren't buying jerseys anymore.....and jerseys were the thing back in the day....but now they're way too many different types (cheap replica, somewhat real looking replica, a real looking replica, and the real thing) They used to just have the cheap replica and the real one.... they should go back to that.......
They should lower the NBA salaries and cap them.... If they can't live on 5-6 million dollars a year....., then they're idiots.

True, so why exactly arent there caps already? This HAD to have been seen coming lol

Contraction makes sense but it will never happen; Lebron suggested it was a good idea a few months ago citing the fact the teams would have better rosters. Well let's just say the owners and fans didn't really appreciate. lol

lol Everyone is still mad at him. Nothing he suggests will be looked at kindly lol

I saw this coming...like anything else that booms, there's a time where the boom ends and shit hits the fan......

So yeah.... Lower the salary caps....for all sports teams..... if we could live on 30-40k a year...these guys can live off a few million per year..... and all they do is play a sport......

blah, blah, blah... sports athletes' salaries are ridiculous... and soda and popcorn prices are ridiculous as well... cablevision owns more than one franchise, and that's ridiculous... stop shelling out all this money for no reason, and everyone can keep their job.

It's true though, the players' salaries are ridiculous. Remember Glen Robinson back in what, 1992? Everyone thought he would be a huge thing, he signed a ginormous contract and..... he sucked.

This is why the teams have had a bad business model for years. They pay too much but they also charge too much. The NBA charges too much. Why do jerseys cost so much? It's a fucking piece of clothing.

It's also true about too many teams! WTF.

Glenn Robinson was a liability on defense but far from a total bust (averaged 20+ points for 8 seasons ...).

On the other hand you got: Shawn Bradley, Michael Olowokandi, Kwame Brown, Darko Milicic, Robert Traylor,....and your cousin Adam Morrison.

Morrison sucked balls. This guy was like the next great white hype in college then he hits the NBA and suddenly has amnesia and forgets how to play.
