hey guys, I'm teaching myself how to play piano and I think I may have read this somewhere before but I can't quite remember so if someone can help me it would be great

basically, about halfway along on the last line of music their is a symbol joining two notes that looks like this and upside down smile... what is the relevance/meaning of that symbol and how does it affect this piece of music?

here's the music;

even more clarity because I was just talking about this....if the curve is over or under it will qualify whether it is a tie or a slur....slur will be on top, tie under...tie means you will hold the note for the added value of the duration and they will more than likely be the same note....
one more example for the night

yeah and the pedal is an art in itself

thanks for the help guys!

would someone mind playing that last line so I can hear how you play it? it would be a big help to me understanding how it's supposed to sound

i just realised that I had been slurring most of the notes uneccessarily i.e i didn't leave hard;y any silence between notes
