(Not me, a question in favor for my friend)
here's the situation
Computer
1. iMac 3.06GHZ Intel Core Duo
2. 4 GB Memory
3. recording to an external fire wire hard drive with 7200 rpm
Computer display =error 6101, running out of computer power.
Have anyone encountered this problem? I'm running out of solution so I though some of you may have some ideas there.

Not sure what have tried but does the same thing happen when recording to internal drive? That external drive should be more than ok though. Does he run NI cracks? Kontakt etc? they are notorious for causing this sort of problems. If not
Try increasing the hardware buffer size
Try changing the RTAS processor to an odd number of slots. e.g. If its 2 try 1, if its 8 try 7 etc
Try trashing all pro tools preferences

I was having issues with a LaCie external drive and protools 8. The problem persisted whether I used usb 2 or FireWire to connect the drive. I was getting weird distortion because pt couldn't write to the drive fast enough. I bought a Mac Pro off of eBay so I could install a second internal drive. Problem solved
