Sound making software? (NOT beat making)

Hey all,

So i met this guy recently who makes beats for a living, and he was telling me he just sits around and tries to make cool sounds to plug into his beats all day. The only program i could specifically remember him talking about was the "Sausage Fattener." I have also heard that the "out of the box" sounds that come w/ the programs are generally not that good.

I use Reason 4.0, but are there other softwares that are used strictly for making sounds? What exactly is the deal w/ this "Sausage Fattener" thing?

I want to get into sound design eventually , but I feel like I'm going to start somewhere that doesn't involve "sausage fattener" lmao. I don't even want to google tht to find out how to get / use it.

if you have reason you already can make your own sounds. just mess around with subtractor or maelstrom. there are lots of stock sounds in reason that are really quite good. you can make the not so good ones better by using reverb, delay, distortion etc
