I was brought up in music. My father is a music lover. We had a whole bunch of records, 8 tracks and tapes in my house, and my father was always blasting away... (I'll have to check if there are some potential sample in those). The music was mostly carabean and french music (Brassens, Aznavour, Sweet Micky, Tabou Kombo... etc) and he's a guitar player too, so he was always playing the guitar while listening to music. My mom used to sing with him before. Actually, I think my best memories of my parents are both of them, on the porch, my mom singing and my father playing the guitar...
Later on, I got to learn drum playing at church. The church paid a maestro to make us (the church's group: a pianist, a guitarist (my pops), a trumpet player (my lil bro), a sax player, a bassist and a flute player)learn to play togheter. Most of the others learned chord progression and all that, but since the maestro wasn't a drum player (he's an ill trumpet player), he learned me how to fit my drums in the band arrangments... Since we were young, except for my dad, we were always making remixes of gospel songs with an hiphop, reggae, dancehall, jazz, or funky twist. And I was the one making those remixes, which was fun (and still is, actually). Right now, I'm the musical group leader, so you can imagine the faces of the grown ups when I remix 'You got Me' or 'You're all I need' with 'Jesus Loves Me'... Priceless!
Then later on, my lil bro got to be in a hiphop group called P.O.Dominos (Principle of Dominos), and they were using fruity loops to make beats. I listened to it and wanted to make some too. First, I tried to make caribean music (kompa), but that was waaaaaaaay too hard (the drums and horns were hard to do, AND the sounds I had were the ones coming with Fruity Loops 1.
Now, why am I doing music? Well, I guess I can say that it's a normal progression. I cant live without music, it's in my blood, it's my fuel! It's something to listen to a hot track made by someone else but there is nothing like listening to a bome beat that you made.
