i think it's possible to mix a good track in fl - especially for instrumentals. where it becomes a bit more cumbersome is when you include vocal tracks. that's not to say that you can't mix vocals, but i prefer to do that in a better sequencer... fl 7 has some tight ass shit that will help you... -

I use preset's as well. I actually have presets for both the effect (e.g., compression, eq, etc.) and the Mixer Track State. this saves time as a starting point. -

filtering basslines
I use this technique sometimes myself. However, sometimes you may want to still use the para eq to separate frequencies from the kick so that the low end doesn't get too muddy.. I think it all boils down to your ear and what type of sound you are looking for... -
